A vicious cycle of poverty, climate change and violence is rendering life in Mali ever-harder. With a 30% drop in rainfall since 1998, nearly 2 million people are in need of food aid.
Government officials have noted the correlation between the lack of basic needs and enlistment to the jihadist movement: “Even if they [fighters] don’t bring money – just food – they will find allies if they can feed people”. This worrying link between food security and political security is not a new phenomena, having been witnessed in several other conflict areas within Africa. The added element of global warming in this situation, however, makes a solution even harder to achieve (see full article here)
